Tim Wise: Anti-Racist or CLEVER OPPORTUNIST?

When it comes to understanding why some white folks seem to think that by saying things that Black folks want to hear, I’m naturally cynical and suspicious.  And frankly, I’m appalled at the presumption of some to think that Black redemption is dependent upon white salvation. The first question I have is: WHY are they doing it? And WHERE is this really coming from?

If people have been paying attention as I have, white folks are losing their damn minds. Everywhere you look, they are peddling fear of the ENEMY: meaning anyone that isn’t white. Haven’t we seen this before in history? Can white folks be saved from their racism?

Frankly, I have been checking out this dude named Tim Wise who calls himself an anti-racist, he’s a writer and lecturer.  Hmmm…this cat has been making a lot of money from his books.  Link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tim_Wise . He’s also been getting a lot of pats on the back from many in Black community who have been saying what he has been making money from for decades. Just check out his lectures on Youtube: http://www.google.com/#q=tim+wise&hl=en&prmd=ivno&source=univ&tbs=vid:1&tbo=u&ei=hMGoTMeqO8L58AbT_PHhDA&sa=X&oi=video_result_group&ct=title&resnum=2&sqi=2&ved=0CDkQqwQwAQ&fp=3a61e9b269a59aa8

Yes, White Privilege is real. And Mr. Wise has been telling errrrvverybody that he can…but again, why?

And financially, he’s cleaning up, but who’s really benefiting? Have his lectures improved Black unemployment? Have they made schools better?  Is he donating some of his earnings to Black churches? Why is the white southerner so inclined to teach folks about what most Black folks know before they are 10 years old?

Is Tim Wise really a concerned white man trying to end racism or is he a clever opportunist?

He’s now become the elected pundit to react to even the social and political issues of Black leaders.  Take for instance President Barack Obama’s speech to Morehouse granduates: http://www.timwise.org/2013/05/bullying-pulpit-racism-barack-obama-and-the-selective-call-for-personal-responsibility/  He took it upon himself to give his take on the speech.  Now granted, many Black people, including myself–who took it so far as to write a letter to the President about the tone of his speech, in which I felt was more of a scolding than one that empowered.  Do young Black men, particularly Morehouse Men really need to be told about being responsible.  Obama was trying to say things white people wanted him to say–and he got called on it.   But does Wise have the right to speak to that?

Frankly, I find it paternalistic.

He feels it is his calling to teach white folks about “their racism”.  I guess that’s lofty, but does Tim Wise have an agenda?

Just asking…

My mother said something to me when I was a child that has stuck with me as an adult. She always said, “If a person sees you as a fool; you will get played for one.” I have never forgotten that and the only thing I can say to people that are naive enough to pay this man large amounts of money to listen to his alleged exposure of white privilege, etc., etc., than they deserve what they get. I’m sorry, but it’s time for Black people to stop being so damn gullible and really…the rise of Tim Wise is just yet another example of how many Black people…still, subconsciously, desire validation from whites.

I saw through the man from the “get”.

Black conservatives are the worst enemy of our community and it’s quite apparent they let a fox in the hen house.

I agree with Cleonette. In spite of the plethora of information, testimonials and insight given by Blacks/other POC about our experiences with racism and white supremacy, whites refuse to listen to or believe us. Whites tend to think Blacks are hysterical, overly emotional and exaggerate about racism. A white man such as Tim Wise has to say basically the same thing we say in order for our words and experiences to be validated. Very frustating and irritating to say the least.

Apparently you all are not the only ones who are suspicious of Tim Wise. Some other people of color have questioned whether or not he’s really helping Black/other POC with his anti racism work. I was reading about him and his “meltdown” on another blogger’s site. I can’t remember the name of her site, but if you google Tim Wise meltdown you should be able to find it. He tweeted some comments towards POC that seemed to make him appear to be a hypocrite.

Unfortunately, he is necessary. A lot of whites don’t take what black people say seriously. They have to hear someone else white say it because they believe that black people are not objective enough to discuss race relations. He has actually inspired a lot of whites to look within and discover that they hold biases, conscious and unconscious, about black people. When black people talk about racism, some whites become very defensive even when the subject does not apply to them. I think he creates a “safe” environment for them to speak openly and honestly.

Basically, “White is Right” to them. Proving yet again, how racist most whites are in their nature. They just can’t see it.

However, I and many other Black people are growing very tired of whites and are prepared to let them have it BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY if they choose to remain in their ignorance.

Honestly I am rather suspicious of these White apologists. They make themselves out to be the ”good White” people because they recognize White privilege and how the White supremacist system negatively affects minorities. That is good….well to them. I don’t see why they are fighting against a system that they benefit from. Besides they, like other Whites are the ones who benefit from the racist system yet they speak out against it but do nothing to help out minorities.

Now to me, that is hypocrisy.

And President Obama seems to identify more with his White side the deeper we go into his presidency. It is sad that any of us got fooled into believing he was out for our best interests.

  11. dang white guy makes more sense than don lemon a black male, smh. I don’t trust tim wise or any white ppl that claim to be anti racist. I wonder where that money goes he makes, and then I gotta wonder why would the news put him on, when these same ppl will not give Farrakhan, umar Johnson or other blacks who are against white supremacy a platform. I think it is deception, I think they may be wanting us to look at this white man as a savior, because they know a lot of black folk are still holding on to hope that they will do what is right and help us. I think they are trying to say see this white man is fighting against racism better than black men can, I ain’t falling for this. It is just like with music they taking that over and putting all white faces on that, now they trying to take over talking about racism and discrimination, wtf. Let us have something geez. As for him donating money I doubt it, he is just like a lot of preachers that make all kinds of money yet do little to nothing to help the black community. It is up to us to save our money and get ourselves outta this hole they’ve put us in and everybody else are vultures and take any little thing we have left. Its time to kick them all to the curb and do for self f everybody else, that goes for the black ppl like don lemon, bill cosby, will smith, Charles Berkley, the uncle ruckus’s, and the tragic mulattoes.

      Good point.

He isn’t saying anything that hasn’t been said by many Black leaders past and present–of course he’s being listened to, albeit, courtesy of the pass afforded by White Privilege–the very thing he condemns many whites for.

      The irony…
